The Rugged Galiuro Wilderness of Arizona

West Side of Galiuro Wilderness Hiking Access

The Galiuro Wilderness of southern Arizona is one of the least visited Wilderness areas in the entire southwest. Why? Limited entry points that first require a lengthy four-wheel drive vehicle journey and very limited water sources. Carrying sufficient water for a short 2-3 day backpack even in cooler weather can quickly add up to 15 lbs.of water or more.

Be well-prepared if you go: this is one of the most physically-challenging and remote areas on the Arizona map. Access from the eastern side is gentler and offers Forest Service trails that are periodically maintained and typically used by F.S. personnel, horseback groups, and most hikers. The western routes from the Old Adobe homestead near Redington Canyon (sometimes called the Sheep's Wash trail), Redington Canyon itself, the YLE trail, and Kielberg Canyon are less used, and more difficult to find and navigate.

Your reward will be more solitude, the experience of remote sights that are seldom seen, and the hard-won feeling of accomplishment for taking the path less traveled. If you plan a hike and want to speak with an experienced Galiuro hiker with over 30 years of experience, please feel free to contact me via email at sedonainformation@gmail.com. My specialty is the west side of the Galiuros. I may not know everything you'll want, however I can connect you to others that do.
